ARTIST BIO
Kamara Townes, professionally known as Wavy Wednesday, is an emerging studio artist and
muralist based in Pittsburgh, PA. Born and raised in Clairton, PA, Wavy draws deeply from her
roots to create vibrant, thought-provoking art that centers on Black culture and the experiences
of Black women.
Wavy Wednesday holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from California University of
Pennsylvania (2018) and a Master of Fine Arts degree from West Virginia University (2024). Her
academic journey not only honed her artistic skills but also provided opportunities to teach as an
assistant professor in drawing and work as a museum docent and tour guide, enriching her
understanding of art from both a creative and educational perspective.
In her practice, Wavy utilizes pop art and Afrofuturism through portraiture to explore themes of
social, racial, and gender justice. Her multidisciplinary approach incorporates playful and iconic
cultural symbols such as Barbie and other girlish iconography, blending them seamlessly with
her experiences as a Black feminist artist. This creates a unique narrative that is both personal
and universal, highlighting the inevitable obstacles of intersectional feminism juxtaposed by the
joyous aspects of her identity.
Her work is not confined to traditional studio settings. She actively engages with public art
projects, bringing her vibrant murals to the streets of Pittsburgh and beyond. Her art serves as a
colorful, impactful commentary on contemporary issues, aiming to inspire and show
representation in communities. As she continues to evolve as a fine artist, she remains
committed to using her platform to address and challenge social norms. Wavy’s professional
painting skills have been featured on several public art projects in the city of Pittsburgh, Brian
Burley's "YNGBLKPGH" book, and on popular social media sites like Afropunk and
Supermarket Magazine.
